Read the bill
Will insurance help pay for care?
The answer depends on the medicine, why it is prescribed, and the plan. Ask about your specific case.
Ask the plan about the exact medicine
Ask whether the plan includes the product for the reason it is being considered. Find out your share of the bill and which approval steps apply.
A formulary tells you which medicines an insurance plan covers. With prior authorization, the plan checks a request before agreeing to pay.
Medicare’s drug benefit can cover a medicine for an accepted use other than weight loss, subject to plan rules, as of September 26, 2026.
Under the law checked September 26, 2026, medicines used for weight loss remain excluded from ordinary Medicare drug coverage.
Medicare has a temporary weight-loss programme
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary programme offering certain weight-loss medicines. The September 26, 2026 terms set the payment for eligible people at $50 for one month’s supply. Copay is the name for this payment.
The body makes GLP-1, a hormone that acts as a signal to help control blood sugar and appetite. The programme name refers to medicines in that group.
According to the September 26, 2026 check, the Bridge starts on July 1, 2026 and runs through December 31, 2027.
Whether you qualify depends on your age, weight, health conditions, and drug plan. People with type 2 diabetes use their usual Medicare drug plan instead of the Bridge. These terms were checked September 26, 2026.
In your usual Medicare drug plan, payments for medicines it covers are capped each year. After you reach that limit, you pay no more for medicines your plan covers that year. Bridge payments are outside that limit: you pay them on top, and they do not help you reach the limit sooner. Coupons cannot reduce the Bridge payment. These terms were checked September 26, 2026.
The government agency CMS runs this programme; its full name is Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Ask the person who writes your prescription and your plan which programme applies. The full list of who qualifies and which products are included is in the CMS source on Further reading.
Drug-maker discount cards and paying without insurance
A savings card is a drug maker’s discount offer used with insurance that meets its rules. The cards checked required workplace or private insurance, often called commercial insurance. They could not be used by people on Medicare, Medicaid, or military health programmes. These terms were checked September 26, 2026.
Ask the pharmacy how to use the card and which terms apply to your prescription.
A person on Medicare or another government health programme may still qualify for a drug maker’s price for people paying without insurance. This is a separate offer from a savings card. The maker’s terms decide whether it is available, under the terms checked September 26, 2026.
Ask for the terms of the offer for people paying without insurance, rather than the savings-card terms.
Accounts that hold money for medical costs
For health savings or flexible spending accounts, tax rules focus on treatment for a disease a doctor has diagnosed. General wellness alone does not meet that test. These rules were checked September 26, 2026.
These accounts hold money for medical costs. Ask the person who manages the account what proof it needs before you pay from it.
